My Tropic Isle
Published in Paperback by Dixon-Price Publishing (February, 2003)
Author: E. J. Banfield
Average review score:

Sure to resonate with the hearts of nature lovers
E. J. Banfield's My Tropic Isle presents the writings of an erudite individual in frail health, who had retired to a tropical island near Australia in 1895. An avowed disciple of Thoreau, Banfield personally observed and experienced the wonder and complexity in nature. This in turn, brought an enduring joy to his life, and motivated him to lobby the government to declare his beloved island (and others near it) as "Reserves for the Protection and Preservation of Native Birds." A thoughtful account sure to resonate with the hearts of nature lovers everywhere, My Tropic Isle is a welcome addition to the growing library of Nature Conservation literature.

My World Is an Island
Published in Paperback by Down East Books (September, 1991)
Author: Elisabeth Ogilvie
Average review score:

Charming slice of the simple life in Maine
In this memoir, Ogilvie humorously writes about her life on Gay's Island off the coast of Maine living in a house aptly called "Tide's Way" which she shared with her married friends Roy and Dot. The book starts out with their move from another island to Gay's Island, adventurously transporting their furniture by boat. She writes about boat trips to Port Clyde to get groceries; rowing trip excursions; attempts at building different "writer's studios" in the woods, and more. She also writes about their humorous and loveable pets that you won't forget - Blackie the sheep with "black felt ears"; Tristan and Soldi the cats; and Smokey and Susan, the dogs. Anyone who likes reading about a simple life connected to nature will enjoy this book. If you like this book, I recommend reading Gladys Taber's books and also Louise Dickinson Rich's works.

Mysterious Islands: Forgotten Tales of the Great Lakes
Published in Paperback by Lynx Images Inc. (October, 1999)
Authors: Andrea Gutsche and Cindy Bisaillon
Average review score:

picked it up, couldn't put it down
There are those of us from the Great Lakes region who become infected with these sweetwater seas--and I am one of them. The Great Lakes offer so much in the area of recreation in swimming, fishing, boating and just watching. They also offer much in stories and tales of people, places and events on or by the water.

I was accompanying my son on a grade school field trip and came across this book in a gift store. I picked it up and found that I could not put it down...so I bought it and read it straight thru.

This book is filled with the people and events that occured on many of the islands that exist in this lake system. Stories of people and places that are rarely found in our history books, or at most hinted at.

This book is a must have for anyone who collects tales of the Great Lakes.

The Mystery of Edisto Island
Published in Paperback by Sandlapper Pub Co (December, 1994)
Authors: Idella Bodie, Gay Haff Kovach, and Barbara Stone

The Mystery of Edisto Island
I found this book on my family's vacation at Pawley's Island in South Carolina. I chose it because I like mysteries and this one also contained some of the early history of SC and the area we were visiting. The book was filled with suspense and excitement. I had trouble with old Gabe speaking gullah so I was glad for a glossary at the end of the book.

I read a few chapters every night before I went to bed. At times I couldn't put it down, especially when we were about to find out why the couple, Hugh and Roxie, were after old Gabe!

One of my favorite parts in the story was when Phil and Jerry
were hiding in the shed where the shrimp boats come in to dock. The couple was on to them and might have taken them captive if they were caught helping Gabe.

I liked the kids' plot with the "conjure man" to get clothes from the couple so he could make voo-doo dolls. It was interesting how superstition was part of Gabe's beliefs. I was really nervous when the kids were taken captive and put on Botany Bay Island. I thought it was resourceful of them to spell HELP out of sea shells.
